Item Developments and trends in emergency lighting systems: from energy-efficiency to zero electrical power consumption(Springer, 2024) Abdelmoumene, Abdelkader; Bentarzi, Hamid; Iqbal, Atif; Krama, AbdelbassetEmergency lighting systems are an essential component of building safety infrastructure and play a critical role in ensuring the safety of people during power outages or other emergencies. As energy efficiency and environmental sustainability continue to be a focus in building design and construction, there is a growing interest in developing emergency lighting systems that not only reduce energy consumption but also operate on zero electrical power. This paper presents a comprehensive review of emergency lighting systems, with a focus on energy efficiency and zero electrical power consumption. The study first examines traditional lighting systems such as incandescent bulbs and their limitations in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. Then discusses energy-efficient options (CFLs and LED lighting), which have significantly improved energy efficiency and reduced power consumption. It also explores the latest generation of emergency lighting systems (Tritium and Photoluminescent), which have zero electrical power consumption throughout their lifetime and provide long-lasting illumination without the need for external electrical sources. Additionally, the paper presents a detailed comparative study of the energetic, environmental, economic, and life cycle assessment of the different emergency lighting technologies. The results of the study revealed that the use of Power Free emergency lighting signs not only reduces the installation and maintenance cost but also eliminates utter energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.Item Reliability assessment and improvement of digital protective relays(Springer, 2016) Abdelmoumene, Abdelkader; Bentarzi, Hamid; Chafai, Mahfoud; Ouadi, AbderrahmaneItem A review on protective relays’ developments and trends(2014) Abdelmoumene, Abdelkader; Bentarzi, HamidOne of the most complex disciplines in electrical engineering is power system protection which requires not only the proper understanding of the different components of a power system and their behaviours but also a good knowledge and analysis of the abnormal circumstances and failures that can occur in any element of a power system. Moreover, the rapid changing and development in relays principles as well as in their technologies are additional factors that oblige those people working in the field to expand and update continuously their knowledge. In this paper, we shed light in the evolution of protective relays since the onset of electrical energy to currently. We try also to foresee the future prospects and trends in this area.Item Study of the influence of power fluctuation on powertransformers(2012) Abdelmoumene, Abdelkader; Bentarzi, HamidThe study of the transformer in disturbed working mode and the identification of thesedisturbances and their origins have a particular importance for the choice and the dimensioning of thetransformer; and even for the optimization of the exploitation of the electrical energy placed at thedisposal of the consumer. The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of the power transformers following brutal loadvariations by simulating the different electric parameters of the transformer during the increase or thereduction in power required by the receivers. This study permit to identify and analyze the phenomena accompanying the change of operating condition in order to be considered in the selection of transformers characteristics in the eventthat these maneuvers will likely happen
