Abstract

Application of classical PID and fractional order PID (FOPID) controller to an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is presented and studied in this project. Fractional-order PI?Dµ controller is a generalization of standard PID controller using fractional calculus. Compared to PID controller, the tuning of FOPID is more complex and remains a challenging problem. This project proposes some population based optimization metaheuristics algorithms called Ant Lion Optimizer algorithm (ALO), Particle Swarm Optimizer algorithm (PSO) and Grey Wolf Optimizer algorithm (GWO) for solving the PID and FOPID controller tuning problem. ALO has proved to have very high efficiency and FOPID provide good control performance with respect to reference input and improve the system robustness with respect to model uncertainties after comparison are made.
