Design and implementation of Engine Generator Set AVR for Smart Microgrid

Abstract

The design and implementation of an Automatic Voltage Regulator for Engine Generator Sets within smart microgrids are critical for maintaining voltage stability and reliability. This research focuses on developing a robust AVR system tailored to the specific needs of microgrid applications. The primary objective is to enhance the voltage regulation capabilities to accommodate varying load conditions and integrate renewable energy sources. The methodology includes the design of a control utilizing Voltage Source Converters (VSC) and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to optimize the performance of the PV system. Simulation results demonstrate significant improvements in voltage stability and power management. The implementation chapter focused on implementing an Automatic Voltage Regulator using Matlab Simulink Arduino package and Due Arduino board. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the design in maintaining voltage stability under varying load conditions. The AVR exhibited an average voltage deviation of less than 5% from the desired setpoint.
