Abstract

This final year project focuses on the modernization and immigration of the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) control system at the Ras Djinet Combined Cycle Power Plant. Specifically, it targets the transition from the existing Emerson-based control platform to a Siemens-based solution using the TIA Portal engineering framework. The primary motivation for this immigration is to overcome persistent communication limitations and interoperability challenges associated with the OPC protocol in the current system. By adopting Siemens technology, the project aims to achieve a higher degree of system integration, improved data exchange, enhanced reliability, and more robust overall performance. In pursuit of these objectives, advanced automation strategies have been developed and implemented, leveraging the capabilities of TIA Portal V15.1 to ensure both improved operational efficiency and long-term sustainability of the HRSG unit. Extensive simulation and testing of the proposed solution have been carried out to validate its effectiveness and identify potential areas for optimization prior to deployment. Additionally, the project includes the detailed design, modeling, and simulation of a low-pressure (LP) drum level control loop. This control strategy has been implemented using TIA Portal in conjunction with Factory I/O, with a particular emphasis on Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) regulation to maintain precise and stable drum level control under varying load conditions. The results demonstrate the potential for significant improvements in control precision, responsiveness, and system maintainability, supporting the overall modernization strategy of the plant.
