Abstract
This study consists of a scientific synthesis relating to the beneficial effects of intermittent fasting and prolonged fasting on the histology of the spleen during colitis. Fasting means food deprivation for a period of time. Intermittent fasting is fasting of altered periods with periods of normal eating. Fasting has a beneficial effect on the metabolism, and leads to a reduction in body weight in overweight subjects. It protects the hematopoїetic system by stimulating the self-renewal of hematopoїetic stem cells and the strengthening of immune cells. Our results have shown that intermittent fasting leads to a reduction in body fat mass, increased levels of splenic B and T lymphocytes, proliferation of the surface of the white pulp and a decrease in the splenic red pulp. Fasting improves immune defense system response and lessens the severity of inflammation in the colon.
