Abstract

At present, the field of infectious diseases faces serious problems of drug resistance. This problem is further compounded by the effect of antibiotics on human health and biodiversity when found in the environment. Therefore, there is a growing need to develop other antimicrobial agents and other antibiotics to combat the problem of resistance of microorganisms. Hence the recent growing interest in natural molecules, in particular essential oils (EO). Pelargonium graveolens is a potential candidate for application in the treatment of infections. Its antibacterial and antifungal capacities show great potential to replace current therapeutic drug regimens. These essential oils can therefore be used in the prevention and treatment of certain infectious diseases, and to fight bacteria that are multiresistant to common antibiotics.
